The Palace of Westminster is a crumbling, decaying fire-risk. It is also a spectacular estate and an iconic national monument to be treasured and nurtured. The government has decided that the desperately-overdue refurbishment will be carried out whilst normal business continues; the worst possible way to do it, and many glorious opportunities tragically missed.
If we moved parliament mostly online, with most legislation proposed, reviewed, edited and agreed by some form of electronic document management, we could save significant time and expense, and increase the quality and efficiency of the legislative processes.
If a physical site for parliament were found to be indispensable then we have the opportunity of boosting a provincial city by building or repurposing premises to be used as a replacement parliamentary estate.
